He is just 5 years old.
And how to teach a 5-year-old kid?
How to engage him in meaningful activities or studies?
I try to sit down with him to teach but most of the time I am failed.
Now, what to do?
I am the father of a 5-year-old kid. Like other parents I also want my kid to do well in studies.
I am writing here my own experience with him over the last 2 years. Earlier I used to sit with him
for homework. But he was least interested in doing things with me.
It was a bit of a challenge for me because it was very important for me to engage him in studies.
I did a few things over the period and let me share those with you here.
Communicate with child
Communication is key.
I started communicating with him more.
What is communication for a 5-year-old?
I participate with him in more of ‘his talks’.
Well, I mentioned here ‘his talks’. He has his world from Spider-Man to Captain America.
I think that every kid has their world. I realized that it’s very important to participate
and involve more in “his talks’.
I started to hear out his stories.
I tell some of my stories to him.
This helps me to build bonds with him. When you have a strong bond with your children, it is
easier to ask them to do things for you. They start following you. Communicating well with the
child helps in understanding the likes and dislikes of a kid. Accordingly, you can plan how to
increase their involvement in meaningful activities in our studies.
Play, Learn and teach kids
I create games or play and simultaneously involve him in studies. I plan activities around the
topic and involve him more and more in activities and studies.
I use flashcards to teach him and he also loves them. I create worksheet type content which
helps him to involve and learn.
I recommend the concept of ‘play and teach’.

Appreciate your child
Appreciation is the key.
My kid doesn’t take criticism very positively. In the early days when I used to teach him, there
were times when I use to tell him that you have made these mistakes.
But I make him annoyed and angry.
And eventually, he starts telling me that I can’t do this, or I do not understand this blah blah. And he stops doing any work.
this was the challenge that how to correct him.
Now I realized that I have to appreciate him a lot so he can feel confident. So he can enjoy the
homework and can study well.
Now I appreciate him for even small things and that helps me to take him to homework or
studies. It is OK to make mistakes. And even if he tries so he can correct those mistakes.
